Somerville's Creative Writers on

Writing from Place

"Just know that everything in Somerville has been written about at least once if not twice, but not from your perch." —Gary Duehr

What is
Somerville Writes?

This website hosts a series of brief interviews about writing in and through Somerville. We asked: How does living here influence your writing practice? What does it mean to write from this place? And what do other Somerville writers need to know?

The goal of this project is to build community and share insights among Somerville writers—emerging and established, past and present—and to share collected wisdom about a town with a rich literary history. You'll find plenty of recommendations for local writers haunts, groups, and programming as well.

This program is supported in part by a grant from the Somerville Arts Council, a local agency supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. The annual LCC Grant deadline is October 15th, and any artist living in Somerville can apply for funding for a public arts project—I encourage you to apply! The project was created by Somerville writer Rachel Taube.

How can I participate?

We would welcome additional contributions to the site. If you're either living in Somerville right now, or lived here at one time, we'd love for you to participate. Writers both emerging and established, in any genre, are very welcome.
